Miracle of Braunschweig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a miracle of Brunswick , a series of many is anonymous cash - donations in Braunschweig on social and charitable institutions and through no fault of distressed individuals designated, which began in November 2011th

procedure

It is believed that the trigger for the donations, which amounted to over 260,000 euros in January 2014, were various articles in the Braunschweiger Zeitung , since most of the amounts of money, which were each in a white envelope, were accompanied by current newspaper clippings in which the situation was the recipient of the donation was shown. The donations, usually 10,000 euros each in 500-euro bills, went to the victims' aid foundation, the Braunschweiger Verkehrswacht , the Natural History Museum , several day-care centers, various parishes, a soup kitchen , the Braunschweiger carol singers , the Braunschweiger Tafel and the hospice . Individuals were also considered, such as an old woman who was a victim of trick thieves and a boy who has been severely disabled since a swimming accident. On May 17th, 2012 it was announced that primary school students from the British twin city Bath were to be given a donation of 5,000 euros to visit Braunschweig. For Christmas 2012, the Braunschweig city administration received an envelope with 50,000 euros and a list of suggestions as to which institutions should benefit from the amount. On January 2, 2013, 4,000 euros were donated to the German church school in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa , and on January 30, the violence prevention project at the Sophienstrasse elementary and secondary school received 2,600 euros. In March and May 2013, an elderly lady donated a total of 30,000 euros for the hospice in Braunschweig. The lady gave the money in person, but did not want to give her name when asked. In the middle of 2013, the Braunschweig community foundation received an anonymous donation, as its community brunch could not be organized to cover costs due to bad weather, and the Natural History Museum was helped over funding bottlenecks with 1000 euros. In Wolfenbüttel , only a few kilometers away, donations were made anonymously for the preservation of a church organ . Shortly before Christmas 2013, another elderly lady donated 10,000 euros to a Braunschweig hospice, but she wanted to remain anonymous.

It is questionable whether it was always about a person or whether a special donation culture had been established. This series of anonymous donations continued in November 2015 when the St. Marien Catholic day-care center received a donation of 4,000 euros.

Excitement about an undeserved donation

On February 14, 2013, a 27-year-old received 5,000 euros who, according to his own statements , had shown moral courage and was himself a victim. A corresponding article in the Braunschweiger Zeitung was enclosed with the envelope with the money. The donor had written “Thank you” on the envelope. In the further proceedings, however, it turned out that the recipient of the donation was in reality very likely the actual perpetrator who sustained his injuries in a self-inflicted fall while he was chasing his victims. The investigations against the young people he had initially accused of were discontinued. Rather, the 27-year-old now received a penalty order from the Braunschweig District Court, which he also accepted, so that the incident was not processed again in the context of a court hearing.

Media attention

In addition to the continuous reporting of the Braunschweiger Zeitung, other, also supra-regional media such as the Hamburger Abendblatt , Spiegel Online, the taz or the Stern and international media took up the topic. Radio and television stations also reported on it, such as RTL , Das Erste and ZDF . After 11-year-old Pablo had seen a report about the Braunschweiger donations on Argentine television , he turned to the Braunschweiger Zeitung online to draw attention to the existential need of his family and the impending loss of his apartment. It was reported in the newspaper, whereupon an unknown person submitted a donation of 2000 euros for Pablo's family. The donation miracle was processed by the Austrian bestselling author Daniel Glattauer in his novel Gift (2014). Based staged on Glattauer narrative Daniel Prochaska 2018, the ORF - City comedy gift .
