Xaver Karl

Xaver Karl (born October 24, 1892 in Bogen , Lower Bavaria; † October 31, 1980 in Schwerin ) was a German politician ( SPD / SED ) and resistance fighter against National Socialism .

Life

The son of a brick factory worker went to his apprenticeship as a plumber and installer on the move . In 1912 he came to Schwerin, where he found work in the Fokker aircraft works and joined the German Metalworkers' Association . In 1913 he became a member of the SPD. Karl took an active part in the clashes in Schwerin during the November Revolution and then held various elective positions in local party and trade union organizations. In 1928 Karl became secretary of the SPD subdistrict South-West Mecklenburg. In 1929 he was elected to the state parliament of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin . At the same time he was a city councilor in Schwerin until 1933.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he was arrested in 1933 and imprisoned for several weeks and then placed under police supervision. He continued his illegal resistance fight against the Nazi regime. In the course of the " Operation Grid " he was arrested again in August 1944 and taken to the Dreibergen prison.

After the Second World War , he and Carl Moltmann applied to the SMAD headquarters in Schwerin for the SPD to be re-admitted to Mecklenburg. In 1946 he was one of the co-creators of the union of KPD and SPD to form the SED in Mecklenburg and became secretary of the SED state leadership and again city councilor in Schwerin. He was a member of the Mecklenburg Landtag from 1946 to 1950 and again from August 1951 to July 1952 (replacing MP Ernst Fox, who had fled to West Germany ).

After the Schwerin district was formed , Karl took over the role of deputy chairman of the Schwerin district council . Karl was also a member of the SED district leadership and member of the District Day Schwerin.
