Xeronema is the only genus of the monogeneric family of the Xeronemataceae within the monocotyledons (monocotyledons). There are only two species in the genus and therefore in the family. The two species have a disjoint area in the southwestern Pacific: New Caledonia and two islands off the north coast of the North Island of New Zealand . They are rarely used as ornamental plants.

Xeronema species grow as large, upright, perennial herbaceous plants . The plants form rhizomes as persistence organs. The alternate, two-line leaves are sessile and simple. The bifacial, flat, leathery leaf blade is lanceolate and parallel-veined. The leaf margin is smooth.
The flowers are too many close together in terminal, spiked inflorescences and are oriented upwards. Bracts are present. The large, radially symmetrical flowers are hermaphroditic and threefold. The six identical bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ) are carmine red. There are two circles with three free, fertile stamens each; they protrude far beyond the petals. The boat-shaped pollen is monosulcat. The three pistils have become a top permanent ovary grown. The stylus ends in a scar .
The purple, triple pods contain many black seeds.
Systematics and distribution
The genus Xeronema was formerly classified in the families Asphodelaceae , Hemerocallidaceae , Liliaceae and Phormiaceae. The Xeronemataceae family was first introduced in 2000 by Mark Wayne Chase , Paula Rudall and Michael Francis Fay in Xeronemataceae, a new family of asparagoid lilies from New Caledonia and New Zealand , in Kew Bulletin , Volume 55, Issue 4, 2000, pp. 865-870 . set up.
In the genus Xeronema Brongn. & Gris there are only two types:
-
Xeronema callistemon W.RBOliv. : This species isnativeto two islands off the north coast of New Zealand's North Island (the Poor Knights Islands and Taranga , one of the Hen and Chickens Islands ). There are two forms:
- Xeronema callistemon f. bracteosa (LBMoore) de Lange & EKCameron : It occurs on the Poor Knights Islands.
- Xeronema callistemon f. callistemon : It occurs on the Poor Knights Islands and on Taranga.
