Xiphypops is a subgenus of the pygmy angelfish ( Centropyge ). Atotal of five species are included in Xiphypops , the three only dwarf angelfish species in the Atlantic, Centropyge aurantonotus and C. argi , which live in the tropical western Atlantic and occur from the Caribbean to the Brazilian coast, and C. resplendens , which is isolated on the island of Ascension in the South Atlantic lives, as well as their two closest relatives from the tropical Indo-Pacific , C. acanthops from the western Indian Ocean and C. fisheri from Hawaii .

Xiphypops are on average smaller than the pygmy angelfish of the subgenus Centropyge and only reach body lengths of six to eight centimeters. Your body is overall leaner and less high back. Your lacrimale has two or three strong thorns on its ventral edge. In Centropyge the ventral edge of the lacrimale is only lightly sawed.

Xiphypops was established in 1922 by the American ichthyologist David Starr Jordan described , forming a monophyletic clade within the paraphyletic genus Centropyge . According to some scientists, Xiphypops should therefore receive genus status.
