Yacolt ( ˈjækoʊlt ) is a small town with the status of Town in Clark County in the US state of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Yacolt had 1,566 residents.

history

The name Yacolt is a word from the Klickitat and means something like "enchanted place" (English "haunted place") or "place of (evil) spirits"; Another name by which it was known meant "The valley of lost children" (English "the valley of lost children"). In September 1902, the city, which then consisted of only 15 houses, was almost destroyed by the Yacolt fire , the largest forest fire in Washington history until 2015. Yacolt was gradually rebuilt and officially recognized as a city on July 31, 1908.

2010 Census

As of the 2010 census , Yacolt had 1,566 residents, 454 households, and 384 families. The population density was 1209.3 / km². There were 484 housing units at a mean density of 373.7 / km².

The population consisted of 95.8% whites , 0.5% Afro-Americans , 1.1% Indians , 0.4% Asians , 0.2% from other "races" and 2% two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 2.1% of the population.

Of the 454 households, 55.3% were accommodated by children under the age of 18, 68.3% were run by married couples living together , 8.4% by single mothers and 7.9% by single fathers; 15.4% were non-families. 10.8% of households were singles and 3.7% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.45 and the average family size was 3.68 people.

The median age in the city was 25 years. 38.6% of the population were under 18, 11.4% between 18 and 24, 27.9% between 25 and 44, 17% between 45 and 64 and 5, 65 years or older. 50.9% of the population were men and 49.1% women.

As of the 2000 census , Yacolt had 1,055 residents, 319 households, and 256 families. The population density was 798.7 / km². There were 344 housing units at a mean density of 260.4 / km².

The population was 95.26% white , 0.47% African-American , 1.14% Indian , 0.38% Asian , 0.09% other "races" and 2.65 % % from two or more "races" . Hispanics or Latinos of "any race" made up 1.9% of the population. 22.1% were of American, 17.9% German , 8.6% English , 7.0% Norwegian, and 5.2% Irish .

Of the 319 households, 54.5% had children under the age of 18, 63.9% were run by married couples living together and 11.6% by single mothers; 19.7% were non-families. 16% of households were singles and 6.3% were single people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 3.31 and the average family size was 3.71.

The median age in the city was 26 years. 40.2% of the population were under 18, 8.2% between 18 and 24, 30.6% between 25 and 44, 13.4% between 45 and 64 and 7.6 65 years or older. There were 106.9 men for every 100 women, and 99.7 men for every 100 women over the age of 18.
