Yao Jie ( Chinese  姚 捷 , Pinyin Yáo Jié; born September 21, 1990 ) is a Chinese athlete who specializes in the pole vault . He took part in the 2016 Summer Olympics for China .

Career

Yao Jie gained his first international experience at the Summer Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen , where he was eliminated from the qualification with 5.10 m. After finishing fifth in the pole vault at the 2015 Asian Athletics Championships in the Chinese city of Wuhan , he was nominated for the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing . In qualifying, he missed the final with a new personal best of 5.65 meters. After the World Championships, he took part in the Chinese Athletics Championships in Suzhou , where he won his first Chinese championship title in the pole vault.

On May 18, 2016, he set a new personal best at the IAAF World Challenge in Beijing with 5.70 meters and was nominated by Zhongguo Aolinpike Weiyuanhui for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . On August 13, 2016, he missed qualifying for the final by jumping 5.60 meters at the Estádio Nilton Santos . In 2017 he started at the World Athletics Championships in London and qualified for the final on August 6, 2017 with a jump of 5.60 meters. In the finals, he performed a somersault at the entry height of 5.5 meters .

In the indoor season 2017/18 he was able to improve his indoor best performance twice. After he had already increased his best performance to 5.61 meters on January 13, 2018 at the Perche Elite Tour in the French city of Orléans , he improved it to 5.62 meters on January 27 at the Perche Elite Tour in Rennes . At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta , Indonesia , he was allowed to participate for China and won the silver medal in the final with a jump of 5.5 meters behind the Japanese Seito Yamamoto and ahead of the Thai Patsapong Amsam-Ang . In 2019 he took part in the World Championships in Doha , but retired there without a valid attempt in qualification .
