Yisrael Galili ( Hebrew ישראל גלילי; born Israel Berchenko ; * February 10, 1911 in Brailow , Podolia Governorate , Russian Empire ; † February 8, 1986 in Naʿan ) was an Israeli general and left-wing Zionist politician ( Mapam , Achdut haAwoda , Awoda ). He was a member of the Knesset from 1949 to 1951 and from 1955 to 1977 . From 1966 to 1977 he was a minister in the Israeli government.

Life

Galili was in 1911 when Israel Berchenko in Podolian Brailow (Brajiliw) in today's Ukraine born. His family emigrated to Palestine in 1914 and settled in Tel Aviv . In 1924 Galili was one of the founders of the left-wing Zionist, union -related youth organization Histadrut ha-No'ar ha-Owed we-ha-Lomed (Federation of Working and Studying Youth). After attending school and an apprenticeship, he began a military career with the Hagana in 1927 . In 1930 he helped found the kibbutz Naʿan, where he lived until his death.

In 1935 he was appointed to the leadership of the Hagana. Disguised as a plumber, Galili went to Akko prison in 1939 and dissuaded fellow Hagana soldiers from the idea of ​​attempting an escape there. He also held a leading position in the Mossad le Aliyah Bet , which encouraged the further immigration of Jews to Palestine (against the will of the British Mandate).

During the Second World War , Galili was involved in preparations to prevent a German invasion of Palestine. In 1946 he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Hagana, from which the Israel Defense Forces emerged after the establishment of the State of Israel . In the middle of the Arab-Israeli war , Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion deposed Galili as chief of staff in June 1948.

In the first legislative term of the Knesset (1949-1951) Galili was a member of the left-wing socialist Mapam party. From the third to the eighth legislative period (1955–1977) he belonged again to the Knesset, as a member of the moderate left Achdut haAwoda , which in 1968 was absorbed into the Israeli labor party Avoda . Under Prime Minister Levi Eschkol , Galili was Minister of Information from 1966 to 1969 . In the governments of Golda Meir , he served as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office from 1969 to 1977.
