Yossef good friend
Yossef Gutfreund (born November 1, 1931 in Romania , † September 6, 1972 in Fürstenfeldbruck ) was an Israeli referee who was murdered by Palestinian terrorists in the Munich Olympic attack .
Gutfreund studied veterinary medicine in Romania for a few semesters and became interested in wrestling at an early age . At the age of 17 he emigrated to Israel , where he took part with the Israeli armed forces in the Sinai campaign and the Six Day War . In Jerusalem he ran an electronics store and worked as a trainer for the Betar Club Gym . He was married and the father of two daughters.
Gutfreund enjoyed an international reputation as a referee. The competitions in Munich were already the fourth Olympic Games to which he was invited.
In the early morning hours of September 5, 1972, Palestinian terrorists from the Black September organization stormed the Israeli team's quarters at 31 Connolly Street. Gutfreund was the first to notice the intruders and pushed himself against the door of his apartment to prevent them from entering. This enabled the Israeli weightlifting coach Tuvia Sokolovsky to escape over a balcony of the house. Shortly afterwards, the terrorists killed the trainer Mosche Weinberg and the weightlifter Josef Romano ; Gutfreund and eight other members of the Israeli delegation took them hostage. During the unsuccessful rescue attempt at the Fürstenfeldbruck airfield , Gutfreund died at the age of 40 from the gun of a hostage taker.
Yossef Gutfreund was buried in Israel.
