Zenon Bacq

Zénon Marcel Bacq (born December 31, 1903 in La Louvière , Hainaut ; † July 12, 1983 in Fontenoy , Antoing , Hainaut) was a Belgian radiation biologist who was awarded the prestigious Francqui Prize and the Prix ​​Émile Cornez .

Life

After attending school, Bacq studied medicine at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and graduated in 1927 with a doctorate in medicine . After a one-year research stay at Harvard University from 1929 to 1930 , he worked as a scientist at the Fonds national de la recherche scientifique (FNRS) between 1931 and 1939 and also became an associate professor at the University of Liège in 1933 . In his research he dealt with topics such as physiology , pathology , pharmacology and radiation biology.

In 1944 he finally took over a full professorship at the University of Liège and also earned an international reputation as a specialist in physiology. In his research he also dealt with the chemical transmission of nerve impulses and discovered possibilities of chemical protection against ionizing radiation .

Bacq, who was also President of the Belgian Medical Association, was awarded the Francqui Prize , Belgium's most important scientific award , in 1948 . In addition, in 1959 he received the Prix ​​de la Fondation Émile Cornez, named after Émile Cornez , of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Mons-Hainaut . The awards were given to him because of his numerous important contributions to the physiology and pharmacology of the vegetative nervous system , to animal physiology , to the study of sensitizers in potassium and to the toxicology of war gases .

He was considered one of the founders of comparative pharmacology and was also committed to the interests of the Walloon Region . He was not only a member of the Association for the Promotion of Spiritual Life and Art in Wallonia ( Association pour le Progrès intellectuel et artistique de la Wallonie ), but also took part in October 1955 as a member of the Standing Committee of the Second Wallonia Cultural Congress. He was also involved in the Wallonia cultural center founded in 1956.

Bacq was also president of the Association pour la Diffusion des Sciences (ADS), a non-profit making association for the advancement of science and publications in the fields of medicine and science , between 1970 and 1979 . In 1958 he was accepted as a foreign member of the then Academy of Sciences of the USSR .
