Z for Zachariah - The last chapter of humanity (Original title: Z for Zachariah ) is an American - Icelandic science fiction film by Craig Zobel from 2015. It is based on the novel of the same name by Robert C. O'Brien .

action

A survivor of the nuclear apocalypse, Ann Burden, lives an agricultural life on her family's homestead in the valley, sheltered from radioactive pollution by rocky slopes, favorable weather conditions and an abundant ground-fed water supply. One day Ann meets survivor John Loomis, a highly skilled engineer who has traveled from a distant military bunker to the safe borders of the Burden Valley with the help of medication and a radiation protective suit. Loomis bathes in contaminated water and falls ill immediately, but is nursed back to health by Ann, who greets him at her farmhouse.

Loomis regains his strength and gradually becomes part of Ann's humble rustic life. He helps Ann pump diesel from local petroleum pumps and gets the farm's long-idle tractor running in hopes of storing food for the winter. Ann tells Loomis about her parents and younger brother who left the valley to find other survivors but never returned. Loomis speculates that hydropower could be generated from the nearby waterfall using a water wheel made from the boards and beams of Burden Church. Ann is dissatisfied with this suggestion, citing her father's past involvement as a preacher and her own deeply ingrained Christian beliefs. Loomis decides not to pursue the project any further. Ann and Loomis are growing closer together, growing plants and preparing for long-term colonization. Their domestic peace is marred by occasional tension, particularly around religious issues and drinking loomis. The two are on the verge of establishing a sexual relationship, but Loomis refuses, stating that further intimacy will change things between them and that more time will be needed.

Mysterious phenomena (including stolen food supplies and a half-seen shadow figure) culminate in the arrival of a third survivor, Caleb. Although Ann greets Caleb at the farmhouse, there is friction between Caleb and Loomis. Loomis questions Caleb's background story and motives; Caleb repeatedly emphasizes the religious connection he shares with Ann (in stark contrast to Loomis) and, half-jokingly, proposes a wager for the peasant girl's affection while the two men go turkey hunting.

The three survivors slowly come together in a marginally stable partnership. Both men report of the post-apocalyptic horrors they experienced before they reached the valley. Loomis describes a radiation sick boy who asked him to die; later he privately confides in Ann his belief that the dying boy may have been her long-absent brother. Caleb urges Ann to move on with the waterwheel project, and work begins to demolish the church for materials. Loomis perceives their mutual attraction and awkwardly gives Ann permission to have a romantic relationship with Caleb, but reveals his grief and anger over losing Ann through a racist remark. Shortly afterwards, after a festive dinner, a heavily intoxicated Loomis tells Ann that he loves her before he passes out in bed. Ann accompanies Caleb in the adjoining bathroom, where the two engage in sexual activities. Further tensions between Caleb and Loomis arise after the sexual encounter. The two men finish the water wheel and move it and its wooden channel on the waterfall. Caleb is burdened with the bulky radiation suit and slips twice while climbing the smooth, mossy cliff with a rope. During the second slip, the two men silently close their eyes, both holding the rope while Caleb sways on the edge of the cliff.

Loomis returns to the farmhouse alone. Ann apologizes for her previous indiscretion; Loomis tells her that Caleb has decided to travel south to the coast in search of other settlements. Ann takes this news badly, chases after Caleb but fails to find him and falls into a sullen silence. The electric light and cooling of the farmhouse will be restored. Ann discovers that her beloved church organ and three crude pews have been moved into the barn. The two seem to exchange brief, uncertain glances. Ann plays a hymn, Loomis sits and clasps his hands as the scene goes black.
