The gunboat Zaire was a Portuguese Navy warship that entered service in 1884. It was named after the Congo River , which is also called Zaire.

The gunboats Zaire and Liberal

The Zaire was one of the two boats of the Zaire class , along with her sister ship Liberal . Both gunboats were built in England. They had a displacement of 558 t , were 42.56 m long, 7.75 wide and 3.43 m draft. The steam engine had an output of 500 hp.

history

The ship was mainly used in the colonies of Angola , Mozambique , Portuguese India , Portuguese Guinea and Macau .

Gago Coutinho served briefly as a lieutenant on the Zaire in 1891 . From 1887 to 1889 João do Canto e Castro , who was president of the first Portuguese republic from 1918 to 1919, served on the Zaire , which he commanded as interim commander in April 1889.

In July 1912, Zaire brought a company of soldiers from Mozambique to Portuguese Timor , where they were deployed against the Manufahi rebellion .

On February 5, 1915, the Zaire reached Angola, where an expeditionary force took them.

On July 29, 1916, the Zaire evacuated 545 sick soldiers from Quionga in East Africa.

In 1916 the Zaire was scrapped.

The Beira class included Zaire (formerly Goa ) , who served from 1925 to 1958 .

On December 22, 1971, the Portuguese Navy put a Cacine class patrol boat into service, which was named Zaire (P 1146). The boat is still in active service today (as of 2014).
