history

“Klaus Emil Heinrich Zapf, a law student from Baden, came to Berlin in 1975. He bought a used Ford Transit and started clearing out and transporting the piano. ”Since he did not have a driver's license, Zapf was actually forced to work together because of the driver hiring - the driver was of course also the porter and this 'team building' was repeated with almost every additional vehicle. "Moving homes became the main business."

In keeping with the times, the principles of equal pay for equal work were on the agenda in the alternative economy - the initiator or boss was first among equals ( primus inter pares ) - all projects of the time were subject to the “demands on working life: grassroots, self-determined and to be free of hierarchies ”. The slogan on the Zapf trucks: “Owned by the workforce” was immediately apparent to both employees and customers.

The typical reservations of the old and working population towards students did not apply to Zapf, of course, but they had to be “stable on the stairs” and - “after completing their studies as business economists and graduate engineers - formed the company-trained management” (Lothar Uebel, p. 101 f .).

Opportunities in the 1970s
Zapf saw - regardless of the troubles of the transit routes - the advantage of locations in West Germany, because “Employees moving to West Berlin (were) paid for by the employment offices [..]. After the first moves abroad, the European long-distance transport and overseas departments were set up. "

In the second half of the 1970s - triggered by the nationwide, but above all Berlin strikes at universities, technical colleges and educational institutions - the final upheaval from the 'political' 68 movement to the 'practical' alternative movement took place.

"Zapf soon had the reputation of being the 'best moving collective' and was therefore in good company: around 1980, almost 40,000 people in West Berlin were working in so-called 'alternative companies.'"

- Lothar Uebel: Von hier nach dort , Ed .: Zapf Umzüge, Berlin 2001, p. 101

“In 1979 Zapf's annual turnover exceeded the million mark for the first time. The company reached a size that is unproductive for a culture of constant discussion. […] At Zapf, the conception and implementation of business decisions were reduced to a small core of the core workforce. Although hierarchies remained insignificant, the company was structured and professionalized. "

Professionalisation of the 1980s
In the first half of the decade, the events in West Berlin were shaped by the squatters' movement , who were fighting against the redevelopment of the
area and were able to prevent the destruction of the old town through diverse social support with the concept of cautious urban renewal . The release of the forces bound in this conflict from the mid-80s can also be seen in the history of many alternative projects.

Zapf "became a pioneer of 'outsourcing"' - employees set up independent branches abroad, first in 1986 in the alternative stronghold of Freiburg, later in Stuttgart and Munich. In 1985 the head office moved to Kreuzberg SO 36 , which has now been preserved and developed as an 'old building landscape' . (Evil, 104).

The multiplication of the potential with a still uniform concept with locations in West Germany - despite the still considerable hindrance from GDR transit routes and internal German controls - suddenly turned into an advantage with the fall of the Wall in 1989, because the now expected administrative concentrations and employee reunions in other companies and in the political bureaucracy could be organized from different geographical points. In addition, the fleet of vehicles had increased significantly. A special move by Zapf was to collectively take over the drivers of the GDR forwarding company Autotrans :

From 1990: The former 'socialist-inspired' way of working of the company manager Klaus Zapf and his reputation in the eastern part of the city made it possible to take on workers by mutual agreement after the fall of the Berlin Wall: "At that time, Zapf took over many workers from Autotrans ."

The concept now emerged of 'dismantling' complete logistical structures of institutions or companies, transporting them in a coordinated manner and also setting them up again elsewhere.

Large enterprise

"Since 1990, the company grew Zapf moves erratically: Meanwhile, 300 salaried employees moving a fleet of 57 Furniture transport vehicles, 36 trailers and furniture 500, swap bodies '."

- L. Uebel: Zapf Umzüge , 2001, p. 104.

In 1993, in addition to the 17,000 "normal" removals, the zapf Group specializes in major customers from business and government.

The business field was expanded to include logistics and storage, zapf umzüge was one of the first moving companies to use swap containers . Long-distance traffic was expanded, the "zapf Group" designed in the direction of a relocation network and specializes in large customers from business and government: The 1998 move of Allianz Versicherungs AG with 2,500 jobs within 3 weekends is what the company calls an "accolade for zapf berlin".

With the loyalty to the local business, however, "Zapf remained the largest freight forwarder in Berlin specializing in furniture removals" and a survey by Tagesspiegel on April 22, 1998 showed that "62 percent of all Berliners know the Zapf company." (Uebel, 104 f. )

As part of the move of the German Bundestag from Bonn to the Reichstag building in Berlin in the summer of 1999 , Zapf Berlin and Zapf Bonn carried out the relocations of a large number of the members of the federal ministries.

Present (21st century)

Withdrawal of the founder
After a long absence due to health problems, Klaus Zapf gradually withdrew from the operative business until 2002. However, he remained the contact person for management.

Basis of business and education: The private move

In 2004 “Klaus EH Zapf Transporte GmbH made a turnover of 20 million euros. She organized 37,000 removals, 17,000 of them in Berlin. Zapf has a total of 850 employees, 320 at its headquarters in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Zapf offers a heated storage capacity of 20,000 square meters for the interim storage of furniture, and negotiations are currently underway to purchase a further 30,000 square meters. "

In 2007 the GmbH was renamed an AG. On June 12, 2015, zapf moved after 30 years in Kreuzberg to Nobelstrasse in Berlin-Neukölln .

Remarks

  1. The press consistently gives 2000 as the year of retreat, but managing director Peter Zetzsche pointed out at Zapf's funeral in 2014 "that Klaus Zapf [..] withdrew from the operative business twelve years ago." 3. Uebel, Zapf, p. 101. As early as the 1920s, piano transport was considered the basis of a haulage's performance in Berlin, and for Zapf this offer was an absolute must [...] In the 1980s, “six out of a hundred families in East Germany had their own -Berlin over a piano. According to the Berliner Zeitung on the evening of June 20, 1987 in L. Uebel: Moves in the divided and reunified city , in Uebel: From here to there , p. 96 f.
