Zdeněk Hřib (2019)

Zdeněk Hřib (born May 21, 1981 in Slavičín ) is a Czech politician of the Česká pirátská strana (Pirate Party) and has been the ruling Lord Mayor of Prague since November 2018 .

Life and political career

Hřib studied medicine at Charles University in Prague from 1999 to 2006, including studying abroad in Taiwan . He worked in various public and private institutions in the health sector. In 2013, Hřib became a registered supporter of the Pirate Party and in 2014 participated in the municipal elections in Prague without success. In 2017 he joined the Pirate Party, where he was responsible for health policy. He was elected to the Board of General Health Insurance by the Czech Chamber of Deputies in January 2018.

In the elections for the Prague City Council in October 2018, Hřib ran as the top candidate. The party achieved 17% of the vote and entered coalition negotiations with TOP 09 - STAN and Praha sobě . The new coalition elected him November 15, 2018 with a majority in the city council (39 out of 65 votes) as the new head of the city. Prague is thus the first European capital in which a pirate party provides the mayor.

In 2019, Hřib named a street in Riegrovy Sady Park after the liberal Mayor of Gdańsk Paweł Adamowicz, who was murdered shortly before . In the same year he joined the Pact of Free Cities , an initiative of the mayors of the four capitals of the Visegrád group (Prague, Warsaw , Bratislava and Budapest ), who are committed to “defending the common values of freedom, human dignity, democracy, equality, the rule of law , Justice, Tolerance and Diversity ”.

Hřib is an open critic of the Russian and Chinese regimes. 2018 he protested against the requests of China, Taiwan expel representatives and criticized the sister city agreements with Beijing in which a full adherence to the One-China policy is demanded. In February 2020 he had the square in front of the Russian embassy renamed Boris-Nemtsov- Platz and removed a statue of the Soviet marshal Ivan Stepanowitsch Konev the following month . Robert Tait of The Guardian commented that in this way Hřib restored the image of the Czech Republic as a defender of human rights.

In April 2020, he announced that he was under police protection because Czech security authorities had received information about a planned attack by the Russian secret service . The magazine Respekt had previously reported that Russia was planning an attack on Hřib and another liberal Czech politician, Ondřej Kolář, using the toxic substance ricin , which had been attempted by a person with a diplomatic ID card . In June it was reported that Russian diplomats had probably only fabricated the attack plans to harm unpleasant colleagues.
