Laying out in the European Solidarność Center

On January 13, 2019, a knife attack was carried out on Adamowicz during the regional closing event of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Aid (Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy), as a result of which he died the following day. The perpetrator had been in prison for more than five years for several bank robberies and, according to the media, was increasingly suffering from mental health problems. He blamed the civil platform , which Adamowicz had not belonged to since 2015, for his prison sentence. After Adamowicz's death, there were spontaneous demonstrations against hatred and violence across the country. The funeral service, led by Poznan Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, took place in St. Mary's Church in Gdansk. In total, around 45,000 people attended the farewell ceremony, including the President of the European Council , Donald Tusk , the Polish President Andrzej Duda , the former presidents Lech Wałęsa , Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Bronisław Komorowski , Jerzy Owsiak , Jerzy Buzek , Marek Belka and Ewa Kopacz . After his death, commentators complained that the state television channel TVP, which is controlled by the ruling party PiS, had carried out targeted campaigns against Adamowicz, thus paving the way for the attack.

The Hanseatic City of Danzig has been twinned with the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen since 1976 and Pawel Adamowicz has been a frequent guest on the Weser. After his death, the citizens of Bremen displayed a book of condolence and flags were displayed at half-mast on all public buildings.

Adamowicz was married to Magdalena Adamowicz , a law professor at Gdansk University. The marriage resulted in two daughters (* 2003 and 2010).
