Prince Zdeněk Vojtěch Popel von Lobkowitz (also Zdenko Adalbert Popel von Lobkowitz ; Czech Zdeněk Vojtěch Popel z Lobkovic ) (born August 15, 1568 , † June 16, 1628 in Vienna ) was a Colonel Chancellor of Bohemia .

Life

Zdeněk came from the Lobkowitz family branch . After training with the Jesuits and at Charles University in Prague , he went on educational trips through Europe.

After his return he entered the diplomatic service at the Prague royal court in 1591. When Emperor Rudolf II, at the insistence of the Pope, from 1599 filled royal offices in Bohemia with Catholics who had made a name for themselves in re-Catholicization or who had a strict Catholic education, Zdeněk was appointed Colonel Chancellor of the Kingdom of Bohemia . The eloquent and educated Zdeněk thus became the secular leader of the Bohemian Catholics and a staunch opponent of the Reformation .

When Emperor Rudolf granted religious freedom with his Majesty Letter in 1609 , Zdeněk stood on the side of the opposition and refused to sign this document. Even under Emperor Matthias he was able to keep his leading position. In 1617 he was one of the supporters of Ferdinand II's coronation as King of Bohemia and managed to divide the opposition.

He was able to escape the Prague lintel of 1618 because at that time he was in Vienna for negotiations with the king. Even after the Battle of the White Mountain , he stayed mainly at the Imperial Court of Vienna.

As Chancellor, he campaigned for the conversion of the death penalty to long-term imprisonment when punishing those involved in the uprising and refused to confiscate property. His political influence decreased as a result.

From 1603 Zdeněk was married to Polyxena von Pernstein , widow after Wilhelm von Rosenberg . As an inheritance from her Spanish mother, she owned the later famous miraculous image of the Infant Jesus of Prague and gave it to the Carmelites for public veneration.

The marriage was the son of Wenzel Eusebius von Lobkowicz . In 1621, after the death of his brother Ladislav, he inherited the Holešov rule . After the Battle of White Mountain, he acquired the confiscated goods Bystřice pod Hostýnem , Prusinovice and Dřevohostice , which had previously belonged to Václav Bítovský von Bítov. In 1623 Ferdinand II made him the first Prince of Lobkowitz.
