The Zeitgeschichtliches Forum is a museum in Leipzig that deals with the history of the division of Germany , everyday life in the communist dictatorship of the GDR and the reunification process as well as the challenges that reunified Germany is facing in the 21st century. The museum is a location of the House of History Foundation in Bonn , funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media . Jürgen Reiche has been the director since September 2015. Rainer Eckert was the founding director from 1999 to 2015.

history

On the recommendation of the Independent Federalism Commission to the German Bundestag , the House of History Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany was commissioned in 1992 to set up an “Archive of German Unity” in Leipzig. In the center of the city (Grimmaische Straße 6), the Contemporary History Forum Leipzig, an exhibition, documentation and information center, was built. It was opened by Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder on October 9, 1999, the 10th anniversary of the Leipzig demonstration . Since then it has worked through exhibitions , panel discussions and documentaries. Around 3.7 million visitors have visited the house since it opened.

Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition of the Contemporary History Forum Leipzig begins with the period after the Second World War, shows life in the GDR and continues to the present day of the Federal Republic. The Monday demonstrations took place in Leipzig in autumn 1989 , a key step towards the end of the GDR. At the historic location, the permanent exhibition shows the revolutionary upheavals in the GDR and Eastern Europe , as well as their effects on Europe and world politics.

The fundamental revision of the permanent exhibition, which was completed in 2018, gives the period after reunification more space and sets new thematic focuses: successes and difficulties of growing together, international terrorism, digitization and globalization . 2000 objects, photos and films, as well as numerous interviews with contemporary witnesses, illustrate modern German history.

Temporary exhibitions

Several times a year the Forum for Contemporary History shows temporary exhibitions that complement and expand on the theme of the permanent exhibition. The changing exhibitions are shown on 450 m². In addition, the museum presents exhibitions in the foyer at shorter intervals.
