Zhang moved from Beijing Black Horse to Beijing Guoan's youth in 2006 . There he moved up in 2009 to the first team that plays in the Chinese Super League . In his first season he was able to win the championship with the club. In the 2012 season he was named the best young player and was elected to the team of the season in 2013 and 2014 .

On January 1, 2015, Zhang moved to the Bundesliga for VfL Wolfsburg and became the eleventh Chinese player in German professional football. He signed a contract for two and a half years until June 30, 2017 and was given the number 29. Zhang's performance was broadcast live on Chinese state television and reached a peak of 44 million viewers. The VfL Wolfsburg website was published in Chinese one day earlier . In the media, the change was sometimes referred to as a PR gag by Volkswagen , as the club announced a sponsorship partnership with Linglong Tire - one of the largest tire manufacturers in China. After Zhang was initially disregarded, he was on the bench for the last three match days, but - as when he won the DFB Cup - he was not used. As a non-EU foreigner, Zhang was not eligible to play for the second team (U23).

In the summer of 2015, Zhang returned to Beijing Guoan and played in eleven games by the end of the season.

National team

After Zhang had already been in action for the U20 and U23 national team of the Chinese Football Association , he made his senior national team debut on March 26, 2011 in a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica . He scored his first goal on September 6, 2013 in a 6-1 win in the friendly against Singapore .
