Zielpunkt ( Zielpunkt GmbH ) was an Austrian supermarket chain with a geographical focus in eastern Austria until the beginning of 2016 . In its 254 branches, Zielpunkt offered a full range of around 6,300 items on an average sales area of 500 m². The destination was the third largest supermarket chain store in Austria and employed almost 2400 people. Zielpunkt filed for bankruptcy at the end of November 2015. The entrepreneurs Manuela and Ramas Atanelov bought the naming rights and opened another Zielpunkt branch in Vienna on November 24th, 2016, but it went bankrupt again.

history

In 1967 the grocery chain LÖWA was founded by Walter Löwe and Jenö Eisenberger ; five years later (1972) it was sold to the German Tengelmann group. In 1976 the first Zielpunkt stores were opened in Austria. By 1998, all existing LÖWA branches were rebuilt and renamed. In the course of the insolvency of the Konsum group, Tengelmann took over some branches from 1995 and some Julius Meinl branches in the 2000s .

In 2005 Tengelmann started a major restructuring: In the course of this, 95 of the 361 Zielpunkt stores temporarily became plus-discount stores . Just three years later, the plus discount markets became Zielpunkt supermarkets again, which Tengelmann sold to the Luxembourg investment fund BluO in May 2010 .

At the beginning of 2012 the chain with 300 branches and approx. 3,000 employees was bought by Jan Satek through a management buyout . Satek was already managing director of Zielpunkt under the owner BluO.

In April 2012, the Pfeiffer group of companies acquired 24.9% of the shares. In November 2012 BOW Beteiligungs GmbH took over 75.1% of the ZIP-Warenhandel-AG shares; the Pfeiffer group of companies holds 24.9% of ZIP Warenhandel AG; there was a close operative connection to the minority owner Pfeiffer group of companies.

In April 2013 it was officially announced that the 18 Upper Austrian Zielpunkt stores would be taken over and renamed by the grocery chain Unimarkt belonging to the Pfeiffer Group by the end of the year .

In November 2013, the minority owner Pfeiffer-Handelsgruppe registered the planned takeover of the 75.1% shares in BOW Beteiligungs GmbH with the Federal Competition Authority (BWB), which BWB granted. The Upper Austrian Pfeiffer trading group took over all of Zielpunkt on March 1, 2014. The plan was to leave all branches east of St. Pölten as the destination, while those west of St. Pölten were to be renamed Unimarkt.

In November 2013, ZIP Warenhandel AG was converted into a GmbH and renamed to Zielpunkt GmbH.

The full integration into the Pfeiffer trading group has enabled synergy effects to be used since the takeover in 2014: The Zielpunkt central warehouse in the 23rd district of Vienna became the third central warehouse of the Upper Austrian trading group.

Also in November 2013, Zielpunkt presented the new branch concept. The Zielpunkt branch Draschestraße 66 in the 23rd district of Vienna is the prototype. The new concept relied on sustainability, modern equipment and a diverse range of products. The revised store appearance was strengthened by new forms of product presentation.

On November 25, 2015, Zielpunkt announced that it would file for bankruptcy on December 1 . According to the private workers union , almost 3,000 people are affected. The 229 branches made a loss of 11.7 million euros in 2014 with a turnover of 440 million euros. Simultaneously with the announcement of the imminent bankruptcy, it became known that the owner Pfeiffer was processing a property purchase with TREI Real Estate Austria , the former Löwa Warenhandel Gesellschaft mbH . Since, in the opinion of the union, the owner benefits from this purchase, while he sends Zielpunkt into bankruptcy, they have a possible criminal offense examined. According to Eva Glawischnig, the Greens would also support a lawsuit against Pfeiffer.

Since the outsourcing of Schirnhofer , a long-term meat supplier who operated its branches as a shop-in-shop , was not yet complete, this company too had to file for bankruptcy on December 1, 2015. However, a renovation is sought.

The organic supermarket chain Denn’s takes over 7 branches in Vienna and Graz . 20 branches go to Rewe , 26 to Spar , Hofer takes over eleven branches and Lidl receives two branches. The Turkish food chain Etsan is getting eight branches. But interested parties from outside the industry also get a chance (the number of branches in brackets):

dm (7), Bipa (4), the animal specialist Fressnapf (2) and Libro (1).

On January 2, 2016, 112 branches that could not be sold closed. 1250 employees lost their jobs. 39 more branches closed on January 29, 2016. A branch in Mürzzuschlag that was closed on January 2nd went to Unimarkt. On February 17, 2016, the last 77 stores closed after almost all of the goods had been sold with discounts of 80 percent. 1000 to 1200 of the approximately 2700 employees are likely to be taken over by the new operators.

On February 19, 2016 it was announced that Lidl is taking over eight more branches in addition to the two branches.

In January 2018, half of the old Zielpunkt shops in Lower Austria are still unused. More than two years after the bankruptcy, 42 of the 83 closed locations in Lower Austria have so far not been used.

A rate of 10 to 20 percent is expected for bankruptcy, with proceeds for the bankruptcy estate of 30 million euros.

The Viennese entrepreneurs Manuela and Ramas Atanelov, who are active in wholesale, bought the word image rights to the Zielpunkt brand from the bankruptcy estate . On November 24, 2016, they opened their first branch in Vienna-Brigittenau under this name . After a test phase lasting several months, further branches were planned in Vienna for 2017. The long-term goal was to expand the branch network to all of Austria. The main target group should have been families with a low budget. Among other things, they wanted to offer a wider range of fruit and vegetables as well as more international foods in order to address specific migrant groups more strongly. On February 16, 2017, however, the Ramas WarenhandelsgmbH filed for bankruptcy (according to KSV1870 a "restructuring procedure without self-administration").

range

The company sells products from various producers, own brands , fair trade products and ethnic products. In the latter, the ethno meter, Zielpunkt offered special imported and handpicked products from the Balkans and Turkey . Own brands were the organic line “naturally for us” and the low-price brand “every day”.

In the product range, Zielpunkt focused on goods of Austrian origin. The own brand "Of course for us" was aimed at conscious buyers who value the origin and biological origin of the products. Around 150 different "naturally for us" organic products were offered at Zielpunkt.

From May 2012, there was a separate service counter with sausage, cheese, pastries and meat under the umbrella brand “Feines für mich”.

Suppliers of the delicatessen "Feines für mich" were local companies such as Ankerbrot , Ströck and Felber for bread and baked goods and producers such as B. Schirnhofer, Berger, Moser and Wiesbauer for sausage products. The cheese range consisted primarily of Austrian brands such as Schärdinger and Käsemacher as well as international specialties. In 2013, the cooperation with Schirnhofer was reorganized: By the end of 2014, Zielpunkt took over all existing shop-in-shop delicatessen counters in 190 branches. To this end, the approximately 800 Schirnhofer employees from Zielpunkt were gradually taken over and the Schirnhofer range, along with products from other suppliers, continued to be sold.

Cooperations

Since March 2011, Zielpunkt has been a member of the international cooperation and purchasing network of Markant AG . Joining Markant AG was an essential step in the restructuring process of Zielpunkt since the takeover by bluO. In addition to the joint procurement process for goods, Zielpunkt also used Markant's services and joint market research .

In November 2011, Zielpunkt was the first food retailer in Austria to introduce contactless payment options. In cooperation with MasterCard, customers have been able to make contactless payments with PayPass in all branches since 2012.

In its own interest, Zielpunkt did everything in its power to keep the amount of food that could not be sold as low as possible. Precise purchase quantities, forward-looking planning and close cooperation with social markets prevented food from ending up in the garbage. As far as the food law permitted, products were made available to social markets after the shop had closed. Zielpunkt cooperated with the social markets SOMA , Vinzimärkte, Team Tafel Austria and the Caritas project Le + O.
