Heinrich Zille , a little over 40 years old, was laid off by his employer in Berlin at the turn of the century after 30 years. Although he is now penniless, he can finally devote himself to his passion, painting. With his art he would like to document the lives of ordinary people. But they don't like the always drawing, weird owl. It takes him a long time to show them that he means it honestly to them. A special relationship develops with the backyard singer Jette. She wants to get out of the milieu. She gets a job at the "Tingeltangel" . There she ends up in the arms of a factory owner's son, who seduces her and then leaves her. But she still has Ede, who is the sleeper with her mother and who has loved her for a long time - she realizes that he is the right one.

To the movie

This film is one of the rare attempts by DEFA to make a film in the musical field. Horst Bonnet was originally supposed to direct. After taking over the direction, Werner W. Wallroth created a successful mixture of social drama and Berliner Volksstück .

Leading actor Kurt Nolze was a serious chansonnier who played the largest of his few film roles here. Werner Lierck - one of the most popular comedians since the 1950s - appears in this film in several roles. It was also his last appearance before his death in 1985.

Although the musical uses the name and character of Zilles, it is not a real biographical work. The authors were too free to deal with Zille's life for that and ignored many facets. The original is the never performed musical Der Maler von Berlin by Dieter Wardetzky and Peter Rabenalt .
