Zlatko Portner (born January 16, 1962 in Ruma ) is a handball coach and former Yugoslav national handball player who has also had Swiss citizenship since 2008 . He was mainly used as a backcourt player . He was famous for his good game overview, his technical class and his excellent throw.

The club player Portner

Zlatko Portner began his career in the men's field in 1980 at the Serbian first division club RK Crvenka . After two years he moved to the up-and-coming top club Metaloplastika Šabac , which won the championship title for the first time. Portner played in the European Champions Cup . He should do this eleven times in a row over the next few years with his changing clubs. With Sabac he reached the semifinals in the competition. A year later, the end came in the seven-meter throw in the final against Dukla Prague . In 1985 and 1986 it was enough to win the European Cup. Portner was also six times champion and three times cup winner with Šabac.

In 1989 Portner moved to FC Barcelona . With the Catalan club he was able to celebrate three championship titles and one cup victory. In 1991 he won the European Champion Clubs' Cup again . Together with his long-time teammate Veselin Vujović , he was the first handball player to do so with two different clubs.

In 1992 Portner moved to the French league for champions HB Venissieux . Two years later he moved to Switzerland; first to BSV Bern and then to TV Zofingen . After a second guest appearance at BSV Bern, he let his career end at the lower-class BSC Grosshöchstetten.

Zlatko Portner was able to attract attention early on. At the Junior World Cup in 1983 he was voted the best player of the tournament. For the Olympic Games in 1984 it was still not taken into account. He made his tournament debut for Yugoslavia at the 1986 World Cup . There he won the gold medal as the second playmaker behind Časlav Grubić . At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , Portner was number one in his position and one of the best players on his team. The reward was the bronze medal. In 1990 he was a member of his country's World Cup team.

Private

Zlatko Portner's son Nikola is the Swiss national handball goalkeeper.
