action
The young and lethargic bassist Antti, whom his friends only call Zombie, returns from Istanbul to his home country Finland. As soon as he arrives, he is called up for military service, which he does only reluctantly. After Zombie had added turpentine to the soup for the officers while on duty in the kitchen , he was immediately released. He goes to Helsinki and tries to regain a foothold in life. There Zombie moves into his parents' garage and vegetates to himself. His ex-girlfriend Marjo gets back together with him and breaks up with her boyfriend over a zombie. His old friend Harri first got him a job as a roadie and then as a bass player.
But the aimless musician, who is looking for a meaning, cannot cope with his existence and is becoming increasingly addicted to alcohol. In addition, Zombie falls out with his girlfriend Marjo and gets involved with criminals, making him criminal. To avoid punishment, Zombie flees to Istanbul. His friend Harri travels after him and tracks him down, but fails to pull Zombie out of his indolence and bring him back to Finland.

Reviews
Cinema.de states that Mika Kaurismäki succeeded in stepping out of the shadow of his younger brother Aki for the first time with “this Finnish road movie” . "With simple, poetic means" tell "Mika the story of a loser, the lethargic rock bassist Zombie ..."
The Munich Film Festival describes the film as a "disturbing, very melancholy psychodrama."
The lexicon of international films sees a "darkly colored portrait of a loser type" and notes critically that the film "gets stuck in a superficial description of external circumstances and therefore does not do justice to the problem of alcoholism."
