Zugspitze extreme mountain run

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zugspitz Extreme Mountain Run was a mountain run that took place from 2000 to 2013 in the area of the Zugspitze and was one of the most demanding runs in the Alps with an altitude of 2235 meters that had to be mastered over 17.94 km.

The run

The organizer of the mountain run was getgoing GmbH. In 2000 and 2001 it was held as the Zugspitz half marathon , with a shorter alternative route being run in the second year; In 2002 he failed. Until 2004, the route ran from the Olympic ski stadium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen through the Reintal to the Zugspitzplatt. In 2005 the start was moved to Ehrwald and the destination to the summit station of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn .

The route led first on a road to the Ehrwalder Alm and the Hochfeldernalm, then on hiking trails over the Gatterl, where you cross the Austrian-German border, to the Knorrhütte and finally to the Sonnalpin mountain inn on the Zugspitzplatt. Runners who get off here will have their own rating. On the last section to the summit, almost 400 meters in altitude had to be climbed over 1.3 km.

In 2007 the run at the Sonnalpin had to be ended for safety reasons, which was acknowledged with incomprehension by a number of participants.

In 2008, the run hit the headlines when two runners died shortly before the finish line in freezing temperatures and six others had to be taken to hospital for treatment. A total of 80 helpers from the mountain rescue service , the Bavarian Red Cross and the alpine task force of the Bavarian Police were on duty. The autopsy determined hypothermia as the cause of death for one of the runners , while the other could not clearly determine whether he had died of hypothermia or a cardiovascular collapse . The Munich II public prosecutor's office thereupon initiated criminal proceedings for negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm against the organizer Peter Krinninger and in November 2008 applied to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen District Court for a penalty order demanding a fine of 90 daily rates . In July 2009, the district court followed the prosecution's request, but Krinninger appealed, so that the case was heard in November at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district court. The verdict was issued on December 1, 2009: Peter Krinninger was acquitted. In its reasoning, the court pointed out that those runners who had disregarded the organizer's warnings had “put themselves at risk on their own responsibility”.

In 2009, the day and night before the race, 60 cm of fresh snow fell on the summit of the Zugspitze and 30 cm on the Sonnalpin, so for safety reasons a replacement route was run to the 1714 meter high Grubigalm above Lermoos .

The run took place for the last time in 2013. In 2014, the organizer was no longer granted approval by the Austrian or German side, which caused displeasure among the registered runners, as they had already paid the entry fee. The Munich-based PLAN B event company GmbH then took over the implementation with a modified concept, several route variants over three days. One route option was the so-called Zugspitz Trailrun Challenge "Vertical Challenge", which was held on almost the same route from Ehrwald to the Zugspitze. In 2018, this event was also canceled for undisclosed reasons.
