Vegetative characteristics

The two-leaved green tendril is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters. Two round, undivided tubers are formed as persistence organs.

The stem bears two clearly separated leaves. The simple, green leaves encircle the stems . The bottom leaf is 7 to 14 centimeters long and 2.5 to 8 centimeters wide, heart-shaped, slightly pointed and the upper one is similar but significantly smaller.

Generative characteristics

The terminal, racemose inflorescence is more or less one-sided, 6 to 17 inches long and densely occupied with 10 to 65 flowers. The bracts are elongated and lanceolate and slightly shorter than the ovary .

The relatively small, hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and threefold. The six bracts are yellow-green. The bracts are bell-shaped and converge and form an open tube with the lip. The outer bracts are 3 to 4 millimeters long and 1 to 1.5 millimeters wide, ovate-lanceolate, blunt and slightly concave. The petals are slightly longer than the sepals and curved outwards at the tip. The green lip is three-lobed, 4 to 4.6 millimeters long and 2.6 to 2.8 millimeters wide and slightly longer than the petals. The split piece of the middle lobe is triangular and slightly longer than the split pieces of the side lobes. The spur is sack-shaped, blunt, divided into two at the end and about a quarter as long as the long-stalked ovary.

The flowering period extends from January to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

ecology

The two-leaved green tendril is a tuber geophyte .

Occurrence

The two-leaved green tendil is found in Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia , Portugal , Spain , the Canary Islands, Madeira , Menorca , Sardinia , Corsica and Elba . The two-leaved green tendril thrives in the moist laurel forests of Madeira up to altitudes of around 1100 meters, in the pine forests of the Canary Islands up to altitudes of around 1300 meters, in the western Mediterranean in coastal pines or maquis up to altitudes of 5 to 1300 meters.

Taxonomy

The two-leaved green tendril was first described by Heinrich Friedrich Link as Satyrium diphyllum in J. Bot. (Schrader) 1799 (2): 323 (1800). The new combination to Gennaria diphylla (Link) Parl. Took place in 1860 by Filippo Parlatore in Fl. Ital. 3, page 405 in the genus Gennaria Parl. , Which he himself established . Synonyms for Gennaria diphylla (Link) Parl. Are Orchis cordata Willd. , Gymnadenia diphylla (Link) Link , habenaria diphylla (Link) T.Durand & Schinz , Orchis diphylla (Link) Samp. and Orchis cordifolia Munby . The generic name Gennaria is probably dedicated in honor of Patrizio Gennari (1820-1897), an Italian doctor and botanist, professor of botany in Cagliari.
