Dwarf yarrow

The dwarf yarrow is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows like a cushion and reaches heights of 5 to 10 centimeters. The above-ground parts of the plant are dense, finely covered with woolly, white hairs ( trichomes ). The alternately arranged leaves are pinnate and about four to eight times as long as they are wide. On both sides of the leaf spindle there are six to twelve about 1 millimeter wide, undivided or two to five-toothed leaf lobes.

The flowering period extends from July to August. In a hemispherical total inflorescence there are 5 to 20 cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The basket shell (involucre) is about 5 millimeters high. The flower heads are 6 to 10 millimeters in diameter and contain only six to eight white ray florets . The achenes have a length of about 2 to 2.5 millimeters. There is no pappus .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The dwarf yarrow occurs mainly in the western Alps . You can find them in France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria, but not in Germany. It thrives in snow-damp, base-rich slate debris flats at the alpine and nival levels. It is a character species of the Campanulo-Saxifragetum from the Drabion hoppeanae association, but it also occurs in societies of the Androsacion alpinae association.
