The Zwochauer See is an opencast mine 9 km southwest of Delitzsch and 21 km northwest of Leipzig in Saxony .
It emerged from a smaller remaining hole in the Delitzsch-Südwest opencast mine, which was closed in 1993 , and is located in the municipality of Wiedemar in the northern Saxony district . It is part of the Saxon Lake District .
The lake has been flooded since 1998, the flooding period is planned until 2054. The origin of the flood water is a natural groundwater rise . The aim is bathing water under mesotrophic to eutrophic conditions.
The following types of fish can be found in the lake: eel , perch , lead , gable , pike , crucian carp , carp , roach and rudd .
Neighboring lakes
The Grabschützer See borders the Zwochauer See to the north, the Werbeliner See to the east. The Schladitzer See is about 7 km southeast of the lake. The parking lot north of Zwochau provides access to the Grabschützer and Zwochauer See.
The Zwochauer See has been a bird sanctuary since 2006 and part of the temporarily secured nature reserve Werbeliner See since 2016 .
