"The Signal-Man" is a short story by Charles Dickens, first published as part of the "Mugby Junction" collection in the 1866 Christmas edition of All the Year Round.
The following list contains descriptions of the fictional characters featured in the 3D weapons-based fighting game series Battle Arena Toshinden, developed by Tamsoft and produced by Takara.

Introduced in Battle Arena Toshinden
The signal-man of the title tells the narrator of a ghost that has been haunting him. Each spectral appearance precedes, and is a harbinger of, a tragic event on the railway on which the signalman works. The signalman's job is to sit in a signalbox near a tunnel on a lonely stretch of the line and control the movements of passing trains. When there is danger, his fellow signalmen alert him via telegraph and alarms. Three times, he receives phantom warnings of danger when his bell rings in a fashion that only he can hear. Each warning is followed by the appearance of the phantom, and then by a terrible accident. The first accident involves an awful collision between two trains in the tunnel. (It is likely that Dickens based this incident on the Clayton Tunnel crash that occurred in 1861, five years before he wrote the story. Readers in 1866 would have been familiar with this major disaster.) The second warning involves the mysterious death of a young woman on a passing train. The final warning is a premonition of the signalman's own death.
Cupido
*Weapon: Halberd

Cupido made her first and only appearance in the Sega Saturn version of Battle Arena Toshinden, as an unlockable hidden character.
Plot summary
She is an elite member of the Secret Society, a criminal organization, who secretly participated in the first Toshinden tournament. She is also the sister of Ripper, a playable character in the Sega Saturn version of the second game. She is highly aware of many characters' pasts and personal affairs and offers them cryptic advice upon defeat. She is also known to have had a relationship with Sho Shinjo and is Subaru's mother.
The story begins with the narrator calling "Halloa! Below there!" into a railway cutting. The signalman standing on the line below does not look up, as the narrator expects, but rather turns about and stares into the railway tunnel it is his responsibility to monitor. The narrator calls down again and asks permission to descend. The signalman seems reluctant, but assents and waits with an air of ‘expectation and watchfulness’.

Duke B. Rambert
The railway cutting is a damp, gloomy and lonely place. The signalman seems still to be in fear of the narrator, who tries to put him at ease. The signalman appears to have seen the narrator before. The narrator assures him that this is impossible. Reassured, the signalman welcomes the newcomer into his little cabin and the two men speak of the signalman's work. His labour consists of a dull, monotonous routine, but the signalman feels he deserves nothing better, as he misused his youthful academic opportunities. The narrator remarks that the signalman seems a sane and dutiful employee at all times but when he looks to his signal bell at two moments when it is not ringing. The visitor leaves with a promise to return on the following night. Before he makes his exit, the signalman asks him why he used the words "Halloa! Below!" on his arrival; were they not suggested to him “…in any supernatural way”? The narrator says no. The signalman implores him to by no means call out so again. He says that he is “troubled”.

*Birthplace: France France
*Weapon: Two-handed sword

Duke B. Rambert made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden, as an initially playable character. He also appeared as an initially playable character in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, 3 and the Japan-only spin-offs Puzzle Arena Toshinden and Toshinden Card Quest. His entire moveset consists of slashing attacks and he does not use any kicks, unlike his counterpart in the third game, Balga.
The following day the narrator returns and does not call. The signalman tells him that he will reveal to him the nature of his trouble, which is that he is haunted by a recurring apparition: he has seen a spectre at the entrance to the tunnel on two separate occasions and that each appearance has foreshadowed a tragedy. In the first instance, the signalman heard the shouted words that the narrator spoke and saw a figure with its arm across its face, waving the other in desperate warning. He questions it but it vanishes. He then runs into the tunnel but finds nobody. Within a few hours there occurs a terrible train crash with many casualties. On its second appearance, the figure is silent, with both hands before the face in an attitude of mourning. Soon afterward, a beautiful young woman dies in a passing train. Finally the signalman admits that he has seen the spectre several times within the past week.
It seems to the narrator that the signalman is suffering from hallucinations. During the conversation the signalman sees the spectre, and hears his bell toll out a phantom ring, but the narrator sees and hears nothing of these events. The signalman is convinced these supernatural incidents are portents of a third tragic event yet to happen, and is sick with fear and frustration: he does not understand why he should be burdened with knowledge of an incipient tragedy when he, as a lowly railway functionary, has neither the authority nor the ability to prevent it. The sceptical narrator believes that his new friend's imagination has been overtaxed and suggests taking him to see a doctor.

He is a nobleman and knight, who entered the first Toshinden tournament for revenge against Eiji Shinjo, who had defeated him in a fight previously. He managed to defeat Eiji and eventually found a girlfriend. He entered the second tournament after his girlfriend had abandoned him and joined the Secret Society, now going by the name Uranus. However, before he had a chance to confront her, he learned she had already been killed. Duke then entered the third tournament when he learned he was being targeted by the Organization and he set out to help destroy it.
The following day the narrator visits the railway cutting for a third time, and is struck to see a figure at the mouth of the tunnel. This figure is no ghost, however. It is a man, one of a group of officials investigating an incident on the line. The narrator discovers his friend the signalman is dead, having been struck by an oncoming train. He had been standing on the line, looking intently at something, and failed to get out of the way. The driver of the train explains that he did attempt to warn the signalman of his danger: as the train bore down on the signalman the driver called out to him “Below there! Look out! Look out! For God’s sake, clear the way!” Moreover, the driver waved his arm in warning even as he covered his face to avoid seeing the train strike the hapless signalman. The narrator notes the significance of the similarity between the driver's actions and the actions of the spectre as the signalman had earlier described them, but leaves the nature of that significance to the reader.

Major themes
Eiji Shinjo
The theme of the story may have been influenced by Dickens's own involvement in the Staplehurst rail crash on the 9th of June 1865. While passing over a viaduct in Kent, the train on which he was travelling jumped a gap in the line, causing the central and rear carriages to fall onto the riverbed below. Dickens was in the only first-class carriage to survive.
*Birthplace: Japan Japan
*Weapon: Byakko katana

Eiji Shinjo made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden as an initially playable character and from then on appeared in all later games, including the spin-offs released only in Japan. He also makes a guest appearance in another fighting game produced by Takara, D-Xhird, as a hidden, playable character.
Film, TV or theatrical adaptations
"The Signal-Man" was adapted for television in 1976 by the BBC, with Denholm Elliott as the principal character. The film follows the story closely, and is now a classic TV ghost story. This BBC production was filmed on the Severn Valley Railway, a fake signal box was erected in the cutting by Kidderminster tunnel, and the interior signalbox shots were filmed in Highley signalbox.

He is an adventurer who was trained in swordfighting, along with his friend Kayin Amoh, by his older brother Sho. However, Sho suddenly abandoned the pair. Eiji then entered the first two Toshinden tournaments in hopes of finding his lost brother, to no avail. However, when he learned he was being targeted by the Organization, he entered the third tournament hosted by it and was finally reunited with Sho. With the help of the other fighters, he managed to destroy the Organization and its leader Abel.

Afterwards, Eiji trained Sho's son Subaru in swordfighting and eventually passed down his katana to him. He was then offered to become the leader of a new criminal organization named the Gerard Foundation. He accepted, hoping to dismantle it from within. With the help of the altered humans Eos and Zero, he participated in the fourth tournament to gather the Four Sacred Arms; powerful, mystical weapons based on the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations.

However, he escaped and went into hiding.

One year later, Gaia received an invitation to participate in the second tournament. Kayin then entered the first Toshinden tournament to avenge his father's recent death, who he learned had been killed by a participant who won the previous tournament. He eventually learned that Sho was the perpitrator and his friendship with Eiji was nearly shattered because of this.

Kayin was then forced to participate in the second tournament after his adoptive daughter, Naru, was kidnapped by the Secret Society. He managed to rescue her and learned soon after that the Secret Society had been destroyed.

Kayin then learned that he was being targeted by the Organization and that he and Naru were in danger once more. Participating in the third tournament, he helped bring down the Organization. The following list contains descriptions of the fictional characters featured in the 3D weapons-based fighting game series Battle Arena Toshinden, developed by Tamsoft and produced by Takara.

Cupido

Cupido made her first and only appearance in the Sega Saturn version of Battle Arena Toshinden, as an unlockable hidden character.

She is an elite member of the Secret Society, a criminal organization, who secretly participated in the first Toshinden tournament[1]. She is also the sister of Ripper, a playable character in the Sega Saturn version of the second game. She is highly aware of many characters' pasts and personal affairs and offers them cryptic advice upon defeat[1]. She is also known to have had a relationship with Sho Shinjo and is Subaru's mother.

Duke B. Rambert

Duke B. Rambert

He is a nobleman and knight, who entered the first Toshinden tournament for revenge against Eiji Shinjo, who had defeated him in a fight previously[2]. He managed to defeat Eiji and eventually found a girlfriend[3]. He entered the second tournament after his girlfriend had abandoned him and joined the Secret Society, now going by the name Uranus[3]. However, before he had a chance to confront her, he learned she had already been killed. Duke then entered the third tournament when he learned he was being targeted by the Organization and he set out to help destroy it.

Eiji Shinjo

Eiji Shinjo

Eiji Shinjo made his first appearance in Battle Arena Toshinden as an initially playable character and from then on appeared in all later games, including the spin-offs released only in Japan. He also makes a guest appearance in another fighting game produced by Takara, D-Xhird, as a hidden, playable character.

He is an adventurer who was trained in swordfighting, along with his friend Kayin Amoh, by his older brother Sho[2]. However, Sho suddenly abandoned the pair. Eiji then entered the first two Toshinden tournaments in hopes of finding his lost brother[2][3], to no avail.

Ellis

She entered the first Toshinden tournament after hearing of rumors that her father was still alive and would also be participating[2]. However, all she discovered was that the tournament had been held illegally by a man from the Secret Society named Gaia.

However, she eventually learned that Gaia was her real father and received an invitation to the second tournament[3]. The invitation also revealed that Gaia had been targeted for death for holding the first tournament by Uranus, one of his co-workers from the Secret Society[3]. Although Ellis felt no emotions towards Gaia[3], she entered the second tournament to help him nevertheless. She was eventually reunited with him[3] and at the end of the tournament learned Uranus and the Secret Society had been destroyed. When the third tournament, hosted by the Organization, was announced, Ellis and Gaia learned they were being targeted by the Organization. They both entered the tournament, in order to help bring down the Organization.
