Melbourne, Australia's Chinatown is located within the Melbourne Central Business District and is centered around the eastern end of Little Bourke St. It extends between the corners of Swanston and Exhibition Streets.

History

Melbourne Chinatown was established in the Victorian gold rush in 1854 and is notable as the oldest Chinatown in Australia[1], the oldest continuous Chinese settlement in Australia and the longest continuously running Chinatown outside of Asia (San Francisco Chinatown was built earlier during the California gold rush, but rebuilt and repopulated after it was destroyed by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake)[2].

Melbourne Chinatown is also home to Sun Loong (New Dragon), the world's longest Chinese dragon at more than 100 metres in length.[3]. The world's oldest Imperial (five-clawed) dragon is in Bendigo, Victoria.

Other Chinese communities

Other than the original Chinatown in the CBD, several newer 'Chinatowns' or Chinese communities are found in suburbs of Melbourne, including: Box Hill (Carrington Road).

Similar Vietnamese communities can be found in Richmond (Victoria Street), Springvale and Glen Waverley.
