Breakout is the second solo studio album by American teen pop singer Miley Cyrus. It was released under Hollywood Records on July 22, 2008 (see 2008 in music).

Background

Breakout is the first album by Miley Cyrus that does not have any affiliation to the Hannah Montana character. Cyrus has said that Meet Miley Cyrus was "just meeting me, finding out who I am", while Breakout was inspired by "what's been going on in my life in the past year."[1] "I wanted to embrace my older audience a little more, kind of taking shackles off and doing the music I wanted to do," Cyrus said of Breakout.[2] Cyrus co-wrote all songs on the album apart from four.[1] "Songwriting is what I really want to do with my life forever, [...] I just hope this record showcases that, more than anything, I'm a writer." A majority of the songs are co-written by Antonia & Tim James, the writers of the hit "See You Again".[3]

Two of the four songs that Cyrus did not co-write are covers. "These Four Walls" was originally recorded by MTV reality TV star Cheyenne Kimball, appearing on her debut album The Day Has Come. Coincidentally, Kimball also has a song titled "Full Circle", but Cyrus's song of the same name is an original composition. Cyrus also covered Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun". "Simple Song" is an original composition but was not wirrten by Cyrus, but instead Jeffrey Steele & Jesse Littleton, and in the case of the song "Breakout", it was given to Cyrus by another artist who decided not to use the song for their own album.

Cyrus performed a free concert at Bryant Park on July 18, as a part of Good Morning America's summer concert series.[4]

The rumored second single from Breakout is Full Circle, it has not been confirmed yet but is most likely to be the second single. If Full Circle is not chosen it is rumored that Fly On The Wall will serve as the second single as Miley has been performing the song at nearly every live performance.
