Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is an upcoming real-time strategy video game in the Command & Conquer series published by Electronic Arts, and the first game in the Red Alert sub-series since Yuri's Revenge, released in 2001. Announced on February 14, 2008, the game is currently under development by EA Los Angeles for Microsoft Windows-based PCs and Xbox 360. A PlayStation 3 version was announced, but EA stated that the production for this version had been "put on hold"[2], and now may not be released, due to difficulties with the system's architecture.[4]

The game takes place in a parallel universe in which World War II never happened and the Soviet Union rose instead as a threat in the 50s. A huge war is ongoing among the Soviets, Allies and a new third faction known as the Empire of the Rising Sun, which is derived from Imperial Japan.[5][6]

Synopsis

In the Red Alert games, it is asserted that Adolf Hitler was prevented from rising to power, which prevented Nazi Germany from forming and prevented World War II as we know from taking place (Joseph Stalin is the main aggressor against Europe in that timeline).

After the events of Red Alert 2 the leadership of the doomed Soviet Union devises a plan to travel back in time and assassinate Albert Einstein[7] (whose own time travels led to the events of the previous two games) in order to change history and restore the Soviet Union as a world power. However, during the mission, something goes quickly and horribly wrong and an "alternate timeline" is inadvertently created, erasing the events of the previous two games, which alters the technological evolution and creates a new, technologically advanced superpower in the East, known as the Empire of the Rising Sun. And thus, a World War breaks out among the Soviets, the Allies and the Empire and is fought with exotic weaponry such as "Tesla coils, heavily armed War Blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks".[5]

Gameplay

Almost all structures can now be built offshore, out of reach of some enemy units.

Red Alert 3 features a fully co-operative campaign mode where the player can team up with another player, or one of several AI characters such as Major Giles, a stiff upper lip British commander, to complete the campaign. The game brings back the Red Alert series' light-hearted style and classic action-oriented gameplay, while maintaining the fast-paced C&C gameplay of the latest titles.[5]

The factions in the game have been confirmed[8] by executive producer Chris Corry to emphasize Red Alert's traditional "light-hearted, colourful" feel by making their differences even more pronounced than in previous Red Alerts. Corry says Red Alert 3 will "[play] up the silliness in their faction design whenever possible". New units for the Soviets include an armoured attack bear, Tesla boats known as "Stingrays" (that can also travel on land, making them a replacement for the Tesla Tank), anti-infantry spider-like tanks called "Sickles" that have the ability to jump over terrain elevations and a transport unit called the "Bullfrog" that evacuates its passengers using a large "man cannon". The Allies receive a new Tanya unit that is equipped with a "time belt", allowing her to transport herself to the past in order to regain health, and "Cryocopters", helicopters equipped with a powerful freeze ray. The Empire of the Rising Sun has "macross-esque" units that have the ability to transform, should the need arise. This idea of secondary abilities is common to each and every unit in the game, although how each ability is employed may vary slightly between units; some may be toggled on and off, others may apply instantly and some may have a cooldown, requiring a period of time to pass before the ability can be activated again. [9]

Naval warfare has also been reintroduced. Corry has stated many units are now amphibious, trading effectiveness for increased flexibility compared to ground-only units. In addition, bases are now able to be built mostly on water with the MCV featured in every Command and Conquer RTS, as it is now able to move and deploy on water, so that all buildings - excluding barracks and war factories - can be built on water[10] and players who "ignore the ocean [are] likely forfeiting a significant part of their potential economy to their opponents". Further stressing this is the fact that, despite some campaign maps being entirely land based, all multiplayer maps will have significant bodies of water in them.

The RNA engine (the engine used by Red Alert 3) was created from the rewritten SAGE engine.

Full motion videos featuring real-life actors true to the C&C-style will be featured in the campaign-mode. Filming has been scheduled for April 2008.

Cast and Characters

As of August 2008, only the following are confirmed:

Soviet Union

  • Natasha Volkova. A folk legend and Commando, Volkova is a legendary sniper with a great reputation for marksmanship. According to the game, her talent was supposedly discovered at a young age, but questions exist as to her identity, personality, and abilities, with some suspecting that aspects of these may have been fabricated for the purposes of propaganda. Her precise role in the campaign has yet to be confirmed, but Volkova will appear in cut scenes and as a playable character. She will be portrayed by Gina Carano. [11][12]
  • Premier Cherdenko, leader of the Soviet Union. To be portrayed by Tim Curry[13]
  • Russian Scientist (to be named), responsible for the time machine which they use in their mission to eliminate Einstein, played by Peter Stormare[13]
  • Russian Soldier (to be named), appears with the Soviet leader and the scientist in the casting trailer. Played by Andrew Divoff[13]
  • Russian Communication officer (to be named), also appears within the casting trailer, warning the commander of the attack by the Empire of the Rising Sun. Played by Ivana Milicevic[13]

Allied Nations

  • Tanya Adams, who appeared in Red Alert and Red Alert 2 is listed on the official "factions" page to return for this game. She has a new weapon called the "Chrono Belt" that teleports her five seconds into the past. This creates a great escape if things get too ugly. She will be portrayed by Jenny McCarthy.[14] Further details are unknown.[15]
  • President Howard T. Ackerman, President of the United States, played by J.K. Simmons[13]
  • Allied General (to be named), a British General with the Allied forces, played by Jonathan Pryce[13]
  • Allied Soldier (to be named), portrayed by former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture[13]

Empire of the Rising Sun

  • Yuriko Omega - a female psychic commando that wears a Japanese school uniform. She possesses telekinetic abilities powerful enough to levitate and capsize a destroyer[18], as well as a "Psychokinetic burst" that can knock back enemies in a 360º arc while also killing any infantry within the attack's vicinity[19]. According to her profile, she is the rumoured sole survivor of an intensive program conducted by Shiro Sanitarium, a private paramilitary R&D firm seeking alternatives to Japan's increasing dependence on high technology in its military affairs.
  • Female assistant (to be named) - Japanese officer who briefs and assists the player, played by Kelly Hu[13]
  • Emperor Yoshiro - Leader of the Empire of the Rising Sun, played by George Takei[13]

Development

Naval warfare is greatly emphasised in Red Alert 3.

A third Red Alert game was unofficially announced by Electronic Arts' then executive producer and C&C lead Mark Skaggs in December 2004, shortly after the release of Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth.[20] However, Mark Skaggs left Electronic Arts for reasons unspecified shortly thereafter, and there was no mention of a "Red Alert 3" until February 12, 2008, when the US PC Gamer's April issue cover was published on the Internet featuring the cover story "Red Alert 3".[21] Red Alert 3 was then officially announced by Electronic Arts on February 14, 2008.[5] On May 17 the first trailer was released.

Soundtrack

Composer Frank Klepacki is to return for the game. When interviewed regarding the matter, Klepacki indicated a strong desire to do so, but admitted that due to the fact that he is no longer being employed by Electronic Arts and currently works for Petroglyph Games, this may be contractually impossible. At the RA3 Community Summit in June 2008, Klepacki showed a video to the entire C&C community in which he stated that he had been hired to work on Red Alert 3, and that he was composing Hell March 3, the most recent update of Red Alert's iconic theme.[22][23].

Public beta testing

The press release advises that PC users can become eligible for the multiplayer beta testing program by purchasing a copy of Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath or the Command & Conquer 3 Limited Collection, and registering a special code contained within these before September 15 2008. The beta testing sessions are already well underway and the testers may report any bugs present in the beta.[5][24]

On July 24, 2008, various people who registered their beta key close to the release of Kane's Wrath received an e-mail stating that the participants would start receiving their Key and Client Download link throughout late-July and August.[25]

The patch for the Red Alert 3 Public Beta contains a large number of bug fixes and balance changes. Current Beta Version v1.3 released 16 August 2008[26].

As of late August, any fileplanet member could sign up for the Red Alert 3 Beta though this had a limited number of keys and is now closed. [27]
