Early Life

Born to (Late) Sri Vishwanathan Nair and Smt Santhakumari, in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, India, Mohan Lal’s schooling was done at Mudavanmukal School, Pathanamthitta & Model School, Trivandrum. In these days, he used to act in the School Dramas, competing with elder students in the completions. He got his first Best Actor Award in the 6th Class for the Drama:'Computer Boy'.

He completed his Degree from Mahatma Gandhi College, Trivandrum. While in college, at the age of 18, he teamed up with his friends to establish a company called Bharath Cine Group and began shooting his first film, Thiranottam, in which he played the role of a mentally retarded servant. His friend Ashok Kumar, who was a college-mate, directed the movie. Unfortunately, the film ran into trouble with the Censor Board and never released.

Career

Films

Mohan Lal has captivated filmgoers in Kerala in more than 250 movies until now. At home, equally in dramatic and comic roles, he captured the imagination of the audience in such diverse roles as the tortured Kathakali artiste caught between reality and myth in VANAPRASTHAM, which indecently brought him his second Best Actor Award at the Nationals or the simpleton jobless youth in NADODIKKATTU.

Mohan Lal made his debut in 1978 as a villain in MANJIL VIRINJA POOKKAL. However, he got more accolades than the hero of the film did. Mohan Lal grew to stardom in the late 1980s. RAJAVINTE MAKAN (1986) was his first blockbuster and proved that Mohan Lal was no flash in the pan and was here to stay. As Vincent Gomez, the underworld don, he proved his inborn flair for conveying the extremes of intensity and emotional fragilities. The film directed by Thampi Kannanthanam made him a mass hero as he mouthed punch line dialogues like "Yes, I am a prince…Prince of the underworld" which had the crowds clapping and going into a frenzy. The films that followed like, NADODIKKATTU, SANMANASULLAVARKKE SAMADHANAM, GANDHI NAGAR 2ND STREET, NAMUKKU PAARKKAN MUNTHIRI THOPPUKAL, KIREEDOM, HIS HIGHNESS ABDULLAH, BHARATHAM, CHITRAM AND KILUKKAM, cemented his position as the No 1 of Malayalam Cinema. CHITRAM (1988) was a trendsetter and a blockbuster in which Mohan Lal played a 'husband on hire' to a rich and arrogant girl. The film is noted for its hilarious comedy scenes and melodious songs. Priyadarshan who directed the film is Mohan Lal's childhood friend. The partnership has presented many memorable films to Malayalam Cinema. In KIREEDOM (1989), Lohithadas' best-written script about a loser, Sethumadhavan, who is aspiring to become a cop, brilliantly played by Lal, is dragged into a fight with a local rowdy. This film left the Kerala audience with a lump in their throat, days after watching the film. He got a National Special Jury Award for the role. BHARATHAM (1991), Mohan Lal's home production, directed by Sibi Malayil won him his first National Award. The film was about the deep bonding between two brothers. Mohan Lal gave an outstanding performance as the Carnatic musician facing a twin tragedy. DEVASURAM (1993) was the beginning of a series of Mohan Lal films where he played larger-than-life characters. This film directed by I.V.Sasi had a strong script by Ranjit. The backbone of the film was the central character Neelakandan the rough and tough lovable rogue in a small village. The film used Hindu motifs to make the hero powerful and created the impression he was an 'avatar' of various Gods. Later it was made formulaic in Mohan Lal films like AARAM THAMPURAN, NARASIMHAM and RAVANAPRABHU all written by Ranjit were nothing but sequels to DEVASURAM. IRUVAR (1997) is a landmark in Mohan Lal's career. 15 years after his first film with Mohan Lal, Mani Ratnam, India's finest director, went back to him to play MGR in this period Tamil film. Even today, Mani Ratnam proudly says that it is his best film. VANAPRASTHAM, a classic by Shaji N Karun is Mohan Lal's tour-de-force. The actor produced the film himself. Kunhikuttan, the Kathakali artist, is undoubtedly his best performance. The movie won Lal his second National Award. Noted film critic Khalid Mohammed had written in his review of the film: "Stripping himself of all vestiges of artifice, Mohan Lal inhabits his role with a searing intensity. The effect is that of an actor who has grasped the complex nuances of screen acting".Mohan Lal won critical acclaim at the prestigious Cannes film festival for VANAPRASTHAM.

Theatre

Mohan Lal made his debut on the stage as Karna in Karnabharam, a Sanskrit Drama which was premiered in Delhi's Kamani auditorium as a part of the National Theatre Festival. And Mohan Lal did prove that he is second to none even on the stage. The story is of Karna (A glowing character in Mahabharata, the Indian epic). A day before the Kurukshetra war, Karna is thinking about his past and his faith. The mental agony of Karna is the main theme of the drama.

Kadhayattam, is a presentation enacted by Mohan Lal which would depict 10 unforgettable characters and situations selected from Malayalam literature. Kadhayattam is Mohan Lal's offering to Malayalam, his mother tongue. The presentation, which is a fusion of stage acting, movie expression, sound and lighting techniques and music, has been conceived by film director, T.K. Rajeev Kumar.

Many as a motivation for liking him mentioned his versatility: he is often perceived as able to ‘do’ Violence, Love, Sadness, Fear, Comedy, and Drama and so on, and is put forward by his supporters as a ‘real’ star, an actor who can constantly surprise his public and offer them new insights into his enormous talent. On, reports of his unexpected on-set improvisations in dance or dialogue one fan offered the interesting observation that, “he has many different ways of smiling”.

Personal life

Family

Lal is a family man. He married Suchitra, daughter of veteran actor-producer K. Balaji, on 28 April 1988. He has two children; Pranav and Vismaya. Pranav is trying to emulate his father and has already acted in some movies

Awards

Mohanlal won the Padma Shri award by the Indian Government in 2001. He was elected as the Most Popular Keralite by the survey conducted by CNN - IBN related to the Silver Jubilee of Kerala formation in 2006.
