(11870) Sverige is a main outer belt asteroid discovered on October 7, 1989 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809).
The asteroid was named after the northern European state of Sweden . Sverige is the name of Sweden in the Swedish language . The appointment took place on July 5, 2001.
