(12608) Aesop is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The asteroid was named on August 19, 2008 after Aesop (around 600 BC), a famous Greek poet of fables and parables , who is considered the founder of fable poetry in Europe.
