(12704) Tupolev is an asteroid of the central main belt that was discovered by the Soviet astronomers Lyudmyla Shuravlowa and Galina Kastel on September 24, 1990 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj ( IAU code 095). The asteroid had already been sighted on September 10, 1964 with the provisional designation 1964 RK at this observatory and on August 4, 1981 (1981 PJ) at the Anderson Mesa Station of the Lowell Observatory in Arizona .

(12704) Tupolev was named on March 9, 2001 after the Soviet aircraft designer Andrei Nikolajewitsch Tupolew (1888–1972).
