The Bilaspur district is located in the northern part of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .
It extends over an area of 5818.49 km². The Arpa River flows through the district in a southerly direction, passes the district capital Bilaspur and flows in the south into the Shivnath , which forms the southern district boundary. Other rivers in the district are Maniyari and Lilagar , both of which are also left tributaries of the Shivnath. The Amarkantak-Lapha Hill Range separates the southern part of the district from the northern part. There are the Tehsils Marwahi , Pendra and Pendra Road .

The Bilaspur district already existed before the establishment of the state of Chhattisgarh on November 1, 2000 and was previously part of the state of Madhya Pradesh .
population
In 2011, the Bilaspur district had 2,663,629 inhabitants on an area of 8272 km². On January 1, 2012, the three Tehsils Mungeli , Lormi and Pathariya to the west split off and have since formed the newly established Mungeli district . This reduced the area of the district to 5818.49 km². According to the 2011 census, the corresponding population was just under 2 million. The gender distribution was 1000 men for 970 women. The literacy rate was 72.9%.

The district is divided into 8 Tehsils: Bilaspur , Bilha , Kota , Marwahi , Masturi , Pendra , Pendra Road and Takhatpur . The district capital, Bilaspur, is a municipal corporation . There are also 16 cities and 899 villages.
