(2001) Einstein is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on March 5, 1973 by the Swiss astronomer Paul Wild at the Zimmerwald Observatory ( IAU code 026 ) in the Swiss community of Wald in the canton of Bern .
It was named on October 15, 1977 after the theoretical physicist and founder of the theory of relativity Albert Einstein .
