(23644) Yamaneko is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 13 January 1997 by the Japanese astronomer Akimasa Nakamura at Kuma-Kōgen Observatory ( IAU code 360) in Kumakogen in the Japanese prefecture of Ehime was discovered.
The asteroid was named on July 24, 2002 after the Japanese Yamaneko Group of Comet Observers , founded in 1980 by Kiyotaka Ichikawa and Akimasa Nakamura.
