(3130) Hillary is an asteroid of the main inner belt , which was discovered on December 20, 1981 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kle Observ Observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . There had been unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid before, for example on May 17, 1980 (1980 KO 1 ) at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj .

(3130) Hillary belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called the Hertha family, after (135) Hertha ). The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (3130) Hillary are almost identical to those of the smaller one, assuming the absolute brightness of 16.3 compared to 13.0, asteroids (154496) 2003 FK 18 .

(3130) Hillary is named after the New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary . Antonín Mrkos had worked with Hillary in the Antarctic in the International Geophysical Year 1957/58 . While Mrkos reached the South Pole as a member of the 3rd Soviet Antarctic Expedition under the direction of Yevgeny Tolstikov , Hillary and Vivian Fuchs led the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition . It was named by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) on February 26, 1994. The asteroid (3357) Tolstikov , discovered by Antonín Mrkos, was named after Yevgeny Tolstikov on the same day .
