(36226) Mackerras is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered on October 31, 1999 by the Czech astronomer Lenka Kotková (at that time still under her birth name Lenka Šarounová ) at the observatory Ondřejov ( IAU code 557) in Ondřejov u Prahy . Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already been made on September 14 and 19, 1993 under the provisional designation 1993 RV 11 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .
The asteroid belongs to the Hygiea family, a rather older group of asteroids, as is believed, the largest member of which is the asteroid (10) Hygiea . The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (36226) Mackerras are almost identical with those of eight smaller, if one of the absolute brightness of 14.8, 14.4, 14.3, 14.6, 16.0, 15 4, 16.0 and 16.0 compared to 13.7, asteroids: (64532) 2001 VB 114 , (90762) 1993 TV 3 , (115676) 2003 UF 146 , (117097) 2004 NJ 22 , (215971) 2005 QN 68 , (292387) 2006 SS 266 , (296300) 2009 DA 120 and (332629) 2008 TK 138 .
(36226) Mackerras was named on May 1, 2003 after the Australian conductor Charles Mackerras (1925-2010), whose focus was on the baroque and classical as well as the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, but also on the Bohemian-Czech repertoire. The latter is particularly addressed in the naming text for the asteroid.
