(39880) Dobšinský is an asteroid of the main belt which was discovered on March 15, 1998 by the Slovak astronomers Peter Kolény and Leonard Kornoš at the observatory of the Comenius University in Modra ( IAU code 118). The first sightings of the asteroid had already been made in February 1977 under the provisional designation 1977 DM 8 at the Kiso Observatory on Mount Ontake in Japan .

The asteroid was named on April 6, 2012 after the Slovak writer and Protestant pastor Pavol Dobšinský (1828–1885), who was known for his role in the collection and editing of Slovak oral tradition.
