(5144) Achates is an asteroid belonging to the group of Jupiter Trojans . This describes asteroids that move around the sun on the Lagrange points on Jupiter's orbit .
(5144) Achates was discovered on December 2, 1991 by the American astronomer Carolyn Jean Spellmann Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory . It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L 5 .
The asteroid is named after the mythological figure of Agates , the friend and brother in arms of Aeneas on the flight from Troy , who is depicted in the Aeneid .
