(5381) Sekhmet is an asteroid from Aten type . This describes a group of asteroids whose orbits mostly run within the earth's orbit and cross it from within.
It is named after the goddess of war Sekhmet from Egyptian mythology.
Sekhmet was discovered by Carolyn Shoemaker on May 14, 1991 at the Palomar Observatory .
Sekhmet moves on an eccentric orbit between 0.6669 AU ( perihelion ) and 1.2279 AU ( aphelion ) in 237 days around the sun . The orbital eccentricity is 0.296, the orbit is inclined 5.86 ° to the ecliptic .
Its size is estimated at 1 km. The albedo is 0.25.
Sekhmet has a moon with a diameter of approx. 300 m, which orbits it in approx. 12.5 hours at an average distance of approx. 1.5 km. The moon, named S / 2003 (5381) 1 , was discovered in May 2003 by a team of astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory .
