(6972) Helvetius is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 4 April 1992 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory ( IAU code was discovered 809).
The asteroid was named after the French philosopher of sensualism and materialism of the Enlightenment Claude Adrien Helvétius (1715–1771), who was shaped early by the Enlightenmentists Fontenelle and Voltaire and later heavily influenced by John Locke .
