(6977) Jaucourt is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 20 July 1993 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory ( IAU code was discovered 809).
The asteroid was named after the French writer Louis de Jaucourt (1704–1779), who was instrumental in the Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers edited by Denis Diderot and Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert .
