(7645) Pons is an asteroid of the main inner belt discovered on January 4, 1989 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kleť Observatory ( IAU code 046) near the town of Český Krumlov in southern Bohemia .
It was named on March 9, 2001 after the French astronomer and comet discoverer Jean-Louis Pons (1761–1831), who with the 37 comets he discovered is the most successful comet discoverer to date.
