(7908) Zwingli is an asteroid located in the main belt , which was discovered on March 26, 1971 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory ( IAU code 675) .
The asteroid was named on December 8, 1998 after the Swiss theologian and reformer Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531), who translated the Bible into the federal chancellery language between 1524 and 1529 and laid the foundation for the Reformed Church.
