Älichan Asqanuly Smajylow ( Kazakh Әлихан Асқанұлы Смайылов , Russian Алихан Асханович Смаилов Alikhan Aschanowitsch Smailow * 18th December 1972 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR ) is a Kazakh politician and since 2019 the first deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan.

Life

Älichan Smajylow was born in Alma-Ata in 1972. He graduated from Al-Farabi University in Almaty with a degree in applied mathematics in 1994 . In 1996 he received another degree from the Kazakh Institute for Management, Economics and Forecasting .

Smajylow began his professional career in 1993 at the investment and privatization fund A-Invest. Between 1995 and 1996 he worked for the Department of Commerce and Industry of the Almaty City Council. Then worked for a few months at the Supreme Economic Council under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From August 1996 he worked as a deputy head of department and then as a department head for the National Statistical Office of Kazakhstan before briefly serving as deputy chairman of the Statistics and Analysis Committee of the Agency for Statistical Planning and Reforms from March to April 1998. He then worked for the Presidential Administration for almost two years before being appointed Chairman of the Statistics Agency in November 1999. After a little more than three years at the helm of the agency, he was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan in February 2003 and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the State Insurance Company that same year. Between February 2006 and January 2007 he held the post of Deputy Minister of Finance. After a change of government, he was dismissed from the ministerial post and instead became president of the holding company Kazagro. On November 21, 2008, he was reappointed Deputy Foreign Minister and since October 27, 2009, Smajylov was the chairman of the Statistics Agency. After the agency was reorganized, he remained chairman of the Statistics Committee of the Kazakh Ministry of Economy. In December 2015 he became an advisor to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev .

Since September 18, 2018, Smajylov was Kazakh Finance Minister. Since February 25, 2019 he is in the Cabinet of Asqar Mamin also first deputy prime minister. On May 18, 2020, he was dismissed from the office of finance minister.
