Aeon (thelema)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An aeon ( Greek : αιων (aiṓn), age ) is in the new religious doctrine Thelema a 2160 year period of human history.

Doctrine of the Aeons

Aleister Crowley , author of the book Liber AL vel Legis , which is important for Thelema , postulated four aeons named after the Egyptian deities Isis , Osiris , Horus and Maat . At the same time, the emergence of the book in 1904 marked the beginning of a new eon, that of Horus. There was also a use of Egyptian gods in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn , to which Crowley belonged.

The eons

Isis aeon

The Isis Aeon is the Aeon of Matriarchy . Philosophical features include the belief in being reborn in one's own clan and the cult of ancestors as the basis of religious ideas. The world (nature) is considered sacred. The earth as the Great Mother guarantees the rebirth and nourishment of all life. She is the one primordial goddess, the other primordial goddess is the cosmic goddess as the creator of the universe. However, both are only two aspects of a Triune Goddess that are never entirely separate from each other. The counterpart and companion of the Great Goddess is a hero or horned god . They are sacred societies.

Osiris Eon

The Osiris Aeon , also known as the Piscean Age , is the Aeon of Patriarchy . There are numerous pantheon notions with a dominant male deity, in Judaism and Christianity one believes in a transcendent God the Father (while in Islam the representation of God as “father” is strictly rejected and uncompromisingly differentiated between father and creator). Likewise, Osiris is the god of death, who is directly associated with suffering. See also the change of Isis and the Osirisäons under Axial Age .

Horus Eon

The Horus Aeon , also known as the Aquarian Age , is the Child's Aeon. As described in Magick , this aeon is not about the belief in a god or deities, but about certainty that is to be scientifically researched with the aim of becoming god oneself or of merging with the godhead .

The Aeon of the Maat

In the Liber AL vel Legis (AL III: 34) it is indicated that another god will come who will replace Horus. Aleister Crowley suspected that the next eon would be Maat, the goddess of justice. For this reason, he was of the opinion that one should strive for justice as an ideal now.

Charles Stansfield Jones (Brother Achad) declared the aeon of Horus ended in 1948 and believed that the aeon of mates had begun. His writings on the Maat were never published and have been forgotten because he was not taken seriously by most thelemites.

In 1974 Maggie Ingalls (Soror Nema) channeled the Liber Pennae Praenumbra . In it the Aeon of Maat and IPSOS is proclaimed as the word for this Aeon. She sent the Liber Pennae Praenumbra to Kenneth Grant , which he then incorporated into his work Outside The Circles Of Time , as he saw in it "a key to the transaonic understanding of magic". Grant, head of the Typhonic OTO, explained that the eons should not be understood as linear and consecutive, but existed in parallel, so that they can be experienced through different states of consciousness.
