- Spring: During the First Punic War, after a short construction period, the previous land power Rome puts a war fleet of 120 ships (100 five-oars and 20 three-oars) into service.
- A part of the still inexperienced Roman fleet (around 20 ships under the command of the consul Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Asina ) is lost in the hasty attempt to seize the Aeolian Islands held by Hannibal Gisko : Battle of the Aeolian Islands .
- In the sea battle of Mylae off the north coast of Sicily , the Romans under Consul Gaius Duilius defeat the Carthaginians under Hannibal Gisko . In Rome, after a triumphal procession, the ramming spurs of the captured ships are placed on a column of honor ( Columna rostrata ).
- Segesta submits to the Romans.
Eastern Mediterranean
- Beginning of the Second Syrian War (up to 253 BC ) between Egypt under Ptolemy II and the Seleucid Empire under Antiochus II. This promotes the rebellion of Ptolemy the son against his father Ptolemy II, whereby the son who up to then was the Egyptian Associations on the Ionian coast had worked with Miletus under Timarchus and with Samos .
- around 260 BC Chr .: Demetrios II. , Son of the Macedonian king Antigonos II. Gonatas , repulses the invasion attempt of the Epirotischen king Alexander II . After Alexander's death, his wife Olympias becomes regent for the sons Pyrrhus and Ptolemy.

- Battle of Changping : The Chinese state of Qin wins a major victory against Zhao during the Warring States Period and, according to tradition, has all (allegedly 400,000) prisoners of war buried alive. Zhao is forced into an alliance with Qin. The battle is an important step on the way to unification under the Qin Dynasty .
