  • June: In the Battle of Himeras , the Carthaginian general Hamilcar defeats Agathocles , the tyrant of Syracuse .
  • August: Agathocles then undertakes a naval expedition to defeat the Carthaginians in their African homeland. He lands at Latomiae on August 20 and devastates large areas of land around Carthage.
  • The Etruscans , who had intervened in the Second Samnite War as allies of the Samnites in the previous year , are defeated by the Romans under Fabius Maximus Rullianus in the battle of the Vadimonian Lake . The Etruscan cities of Perusia (Perugia), Cortona and Arretium (Arezzo) then ask for peace.
  • First mention of the city of Perugia .
  • In the Samnite area, the Romans conquer Allifae.
  • Roman soldiers land at Pompeii , from where they penetrate the Samnite territory; there is a tie battle.
