Western Mediterranean
- Rome triumphs over Syracuse under the consul Manius Valerius Maximus Corvinus Messalla and forces Hieron II to give up his alliance with Carthage , instead he has to ally himself with Rome, which leaves him the southeast of Sicily as far as Tauromenium .
- Numerous Sicilian cities renounce Carthage and join the Romans. Thereupon the Carthaginians strengthen their garrison in Akragas .
- Foundation of the Latin colony Aesernia (today: Isernia ) in the Samnite area .
Eastern Mediterranean
- After the death of Philetairus of Pergamon , his nephew Eumenes I succeeded him; he makes himself independent of the Seleucid Empire under Antiochus I. Parchment was used in Pergamon under his reign .
- Alexander II. Of Epirus falls, as before his father Pyrrhus I. , in Macedonia , in order instead of I. Antiochus to be king.
